Terms of Service

Version 0.9-draft·Effective 2 November 2026

Draft for launch. Operator details and governing law are being confirmed, and the text is under legal review. Questions in the meantime: contact us via dendrotrace.com.

Dendrotrace is a decision-support workbench. You keep your data and your conclusions; dates, provenance and compliance findings are yours to verify and sign.

1. Who we are and what these terms cover

These Terms govern use of the Dendrotrace web application at dendrotrace.com and its sub-domains (the “Service”), operated by Dendrotrace, Registered address to be confirmed, Company registration number to be confirmed (“we”, “us”).

By opening the workbench you accept these Terms. If you use the Service for an organisation, you confirm you may bind that organisation.

2. What the Service is

Dendrotrace is a local-first scientific workbench. Measurements, specimens, cases, images and vault contents are processed and stored in your browser. We do not operate user accounts and do not receive your workspace data.

The only server functions are stateless pass-through requests to public or authorised research repositories (for example DANS/DCCD) that browsers cannot reach directly. These requests are not stored by us beyond standard hosting logs.

3. Licence to use

Free use of the hosted Service and of any source code we publish is granted under the Dendrotrace Academic & Non-Commercial Licence for research, teaching, heritage, museum, public-sector and personal purposes.

Commercial use — paid dating or appraisal work, consultancy deliverables, regulatory due-diligence services, or integration into a product or service offered to third parties — requires a commercial licence from us. Contact us for terms; evaluation for up to 60 days is permitted without one.

4. Decision support, not determination

All statistics, candidate dates, felling ranges, provenance rankings, species screenings and EUDR risk outcomes are computed aids. They are not certifications, expert opinions, legal advice or regulatory determinations.

A calendar date, attribution or compliance conclusion becomes valid only when a qualified analyst has reviewed the evidence and signed it. You remain solely responsible for conclusions issued in your name, including dossiers prepared for Historic England, Landesämter für Denkmalpflege, DRAC, courts, auction houses or competent authorities under Regulation (EU) 2023/1115.

Bundled demonstration specimens, cases and volumes are synthetic unless their notes state a published source. Do not cite them as reference chronologies.

5. Your data and third-party data

You keep all rights in the data you enter or import. Because data lives in your browser, you are responsible for backups: clearing browser storage, switching device or using a private window removes it. Export dossiers, series and vault files regularly.

Reference data retrieved from NOAA ITRDB, DCCD/DANS, IntCal and other sources remains subject to its own licence and citation terms, listed on the Methodology page. You must honour those terms, including access restrictions on DCCD datasets.

Losing a private-vault passphrase makes the vault unrecoverable. We cannot reset it.

6. Acceptable use

  • Do not use the Service to misrepresent the age, origin or authenticity of an object or timber.
  • Do not attempt to overload, probe or circumvent the repository proxies or use them to bulk-harvest third-party data.
  • Do not remove licence, provenance or method-version notices from exported dossiers or audit scripts.

7. Intellectual property

The Dendrotrace name, logo, interface and software are ours. Published scientific methods implemented in the Service remain the work of their authors and are cited on the Methodology page.

Exports you generate (dossiers, audit scripts, certificates, data files) are yours to use, provided their method and licence notices stay intact.

8. No warranty

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, availability or freedom from error, to the extent permitted by law. Validation results on the Methodology and Validation pages describe tested behaviour, not a guarantee for your material.

9. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost data, lost profit, or for decisions, valuations, restorations or compliance filings based on output of the Service. For free use our total liability is limited to EUR 100. Nothing in these Terms limits liability for intent, gross negligence or anything that cannot be limited by law.

10. Changes, termination and law

We may update the Service and these Terms; material changes are announced on this page with a new version number. Continued use after the effective date means acceptance.

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands. Disputes go to the competent courts of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, without prejudice to mandatory consumer protection in your country of residence.
